02. Heads Together "Funky Stuff" (Kool and the Gang) An excellent brassy take on the Kool & the Gang funker from this unknown glam-funk group, taken from the album “Heads Together” released in 1974 on SRT (SRTM73345). |
03. ABC Hit Band "Super Strut" (Deodato) A bristling take on the Deodato funk-a-thon from the ABC Hit Band -complete mysteries, apart from their residency at the Westward Ho! Holiday camp that manufactured the album “Cabaret at the Kingsley Leisure Club”, released on Kingsley Leisure (KLC101) in 1978. |
04. Vince Earl Attraction "Can’t Get Enough of Your Love" (Barry White) Famous as Ron Dixon in the Liverpool soap opera Brookside, Vince Earl has also had a long carer as a singer. His take on the Barry White love-fest is taken from the album “Can’t Get Enough” released on Amazon Records in 1973. |
05. Mythology "Easy Livin’" (Hensley) Another group of which very little is known apart from this frenetic run at the Uriah Heep wah-infested power-pop anthem, taken from the 1974 album “The Exciting Sounds of Mythology” on the Suffolk label Hillside (HILLP3002). |
06. Frazer Mak "Sundance" (Smith/Gunton) This Goblin-like prog epic was miraculously summoned from the spiritual ether, not by a band of globe-spanning rock behemoths, but by these midlands part-timers, taken from the 1978 album “A Rare Blend of Music” on SRT Records (SRTZ78407). |
07. Brass Foundry "Superstition" (Wonder) This Leicester group found early success on the Northern Soul scene with a major label, but this super-funky take on the Stevie Wonder classic is taken from the later album “Demobilised” released on Sticky Records. |
08. Graham Walsh "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" (Wonder) Back in those days, even the geezer who owned the music shop in a no-mark East Midlands town got to make a record! This cheerful take on the Stevie Wonder smash is taken from the album “Keyboard Kaleidoscope” on Midland Sound Recording (MSRS1390). |
09. New Jersey Turnpike "Long Train Running" (Johnston) Not much is known about this crew apart from this excellent take on the Doobie Brothers hit, taken from the 1976 SRT album “Turn the Page” (SRTM/CUS041). |
10. Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra "Sax Bap" (Peter Birkby) Rousing big band jazzy funk all the way from 1985, but sounding more like it was recorded ten years earlier. One of the few efforts of this illustrious youth band not to be re-released on their own label, taken from the album “Steaming Jazz” on Gateway Records (Gateway001). |
11. Melodians Steel Band "Fur Elise" (Arr. Terry Noel) A reggae steel band version of the classical theme from an early incarnation of a now highly regarded steel orchestra run by the legendary Terry Noel. Taken from the 1972 SRT album “In the Mood for Dancing” (SRT72201). |
12. Paul Brown Trio "Agua de Beber" (Jobim) Smooth Fender-Rhodes Latin jazz from this unknown North East group, taken from the 1979 Bullseye Music Records & Tapes LP “First Light” (BLP017). |
13. Black Abbots "Soul Man" (Hayes/Porter) Full-tilt soul propelled by none other than Russ Abbot at the drum stool from the heyday of his cabaret band, taken from their only LP “Black Abbots Live!” (BA400), which came out on their own label in 1978. |
14. Garry Allcock & the Midland All Stars Big Band "Norwegian Wood" (Lennon/McCartney) A slow-burning jazz take on the Beatles number in the manner of top skinsman Buddy Rich, taken from the 1976 Regis Records album “Big Band Swing” (DROY5001). |
15. Tracy Jones "Aquarius" (Galt McDermot) An unknown Yorkshire chanteuse belts out the quintessential hippy show tune at full throttle, taken from the 1976 SRT album “Hi Everybody” (SRTZ76382). |
